Materials made from Basalt Fibres

BCF possess high compatibility with other materials, such as: metals, plastic, glues and fibre during producing process. These advantages give possibility to create a lot of combined materials.

Composites made from basalt continuous fiber with carbon fiber are particularly noteworthy. Volumetric reinforcement of concrete, asphalt, building structures with use of chopped basalt fibres also has wide perspectives.  Properties of basalt fiber are close to the properties of carbon fiber, thus basalt fiber is perspective material for substituting costly carbon fiber in the manufacture of combined carbon-basalt composite materials.

It is well known that basalt based continuous fiber has sufficiently high strength characteristics, thermal resistance stability and chemical durability to impacts of water, salts, alkalis and acids. (More information pls. see BASALT CONTINUOUS FIBER BASIC CHARACTERISTICS and ADVANTAGES). Due to its properties Basalt Continuous Fiber has wide application in Construction, Road and Earthquake-Proof construction and other branches of Industries.

  • Basalt chopped fiber used as reinforcing materials for asphaltic-concrete road pavements, highways and take-off runways;
  • BCF roving used in the manufacturing of corrosion-and- chemical resistant basalt-plastic rebar, sectional shapes , rods, tubes, pipes and other composites which possess durability exceeding the strength of stainless steel in 2,5 times.
 
  • BCF used in the producing of incombustible and fireproof composite materials for nuclear power plants and thermal stations, oil-refining and chemical plants; firewalls in high-rise buildings and other industrial facilities, where spreading fire is not permissible; in the production of anti-wear and chemical resistant coating, Filters for waste water at sewage water treatment plants; filters for cleaning of waste gases from dust and industrial drains. A range of materials that can be produced from BCF is enough various. The basis for their manufacturing is primary BCF materials: BCF roving, BCF chopped fiber, BCF twisted thread.

MATERIALS MADE FROM BASALT CONTINUOUS FIBER

BCF primary materials used as raw materials for manufacturing of:
  • Structural basalt fabrics and tapes;
  • Basalt fabrics made from BCF yarn;

Structural fabrics made from BCF roving for producing composite and electro insulation materials, high durability products; Fabrics made from BCF yarn for manufacturing of printed-circuit boards for electronic industry.

Bandaging tapes are used for strengthening buildings and structures; preventing the formation and development of buildings' cracks, for increasing their seismic strength.

Composite products made from BCF rovings, basalt roving fabrics, are produced by the winding method:  large-diameters pipes, pressurized gas tanks, containers and reservoirs for transportation and storage of aggressive chemical liquids, fertilizers, pesticides.

HEAT-INSULATING MATERIALS FROM BASALT FIBRES

Application: Fire protection and insulation in civil engineering (insulation of walls, ceilings, roofs, facade heat insulation); thermo-insulation of thermal equipment, heating and hardening furnaces, heating mains, etc.

 

SUPER THIN BASALT FIBER MATERIALS

Super-thin basalt fiber feltSuper-thin basalt fiber felt Super-thin basalt fiber (STBF) is a layer of staple fibres of 1 - 3 microns in diameter, tangled and bound with each other taking the form of a felt. This is high quality’s basalt wool felt. Sound and heat-insulating materials: mats, needled mats, needle-punched mats, cardboard, soft and rigid slabs are manufactured on the basis of STBF.

 

Advantages of super-thin basalt fibres:

  1. Basalt fiber is made exclusively from basalts without admixtures of other minerals.
  2. Basalt fiber materials have good thermal-insulating properties.
  3. Material is non-combustible, has a high heat resistance. Continuous temperature is up to + 600 °C. Temperature of Low single (short-term) application – up to 1000 °C.
  4. They possess a high chemical resistance to water, to effect of salt solutions, of acid and alkaline mediums; and have long operation life.
  5. High sound-insulating properties and vibration resistance.
  6. STBF materials are made without using the binding agent or on inorganic binders.
  7. STBF materials do not release toxic substances due to heating or exposing to an open flame.
  8. Low hygroscopicity; it is in 8 times lower than that of glass fibres.
  9. High operation life even in humid environments.

BASALT SCALES BASED MATERIALS AND COATING

Basalt scaleBasalt scaleBasalt scale (BS) is a thin laminar material with 2 - 6 μm, and surface area of 0.5 – 4.5 mm². The term BS was taken due to the material has the analogous protective functions like fish scale.

BS is a unique material for production of protective, wear-resistant, anti-corrosion, and chemical-resistant coatings, reinforced composite materials, reinforced plastics, fillers for friction materials (brake pads, clutch plates)

Wear-resistance and chemical durability of lacquer coatings reinforced by basalt scale will increase in a few times.  Strength properties of plastics reinforced by basalt scales will increase in 2-3 times. Basalt scale combined with inorganic binders allows creating incombustible heat-resistant coatings with operating temperatures up to 700 °С. Coatings with content of BS are applied by spraying that provides high-performance of the equipment.

HIGH TEMPERATURE FIBROUS MATERIALS

Adhesives, fillers, reinforcing materials are the basis for the production of high-temperature Composites.  HT composites possessing required properties are created and produced for usage in specific branches : adhesives for cementation of ceramics and for fabrication of composites and heat-insulating materials; lining materials; masonry mortars for furnaces, material for fettling of bushings assemblies, materials for the production of gas burner's stones, and etc.    

Fibrous Composite materials - VTKM-1, VТКМ-2, VТКМ-3, VТКМ-4, VТКМ-5 Series - are intended for lining of thermal equipment,  smoke ducts; for complex of  repair works of furnace lining (of chamber and tunnel furnaces, pusher-type and other types of furnaces); for pasting together of high-temperature ceramic articles  (ceramic mothers for the bottom casting), for the manufacture of burning stones, as a binder in the production of thermal insulation and refractory materials; and for other usage.  When the specific density is equal to 350 - 1200 kg/m3 VTKM combine the properties of refractory and insulation materials.

 

The main consumers of materials VTKM series are:  

  • Industrial enterprises of mechanical engineering, metallurgy, building materials industry, chemical and petrochemical industries, power, etc., - enterprises that operating by the heating and thermal furnaces and thermal equipment; enterprises executing repair and reconstruction of the equipment;
  • Enterprises - manufacturers of thermal insulating and refractory materials  that use the binders VTKM series in the production;
  • Enterprises - manufacturers of furnaces and thermal equipment;
  • Companies performing work on fire-retardant coating of buildings and structures, especially responsible industrial facilities: of nuclear power stations, chemical and petrochemical complexes, etc.);
  • Companies producing of crucibles for melting non-ferrous metals, of auxiliary heating equipment (protective coating for crucibles, elements of gas burners and etc.)
