Basalt scale (BS) is a thin laminar material with 2 - 6 μm, and surface area of 0.5 – 4.5 mm². Basalt scale made from melts of basalt rocks. The term BS was taken due to the material has the analogous protective functions like fish scale.

BS is a unique material for production of protective, wear-resistant, anti-corrosion, and chemical-resistant coatings, reinforced composite materials, reinforced plastics, fillers for friction materials (brake pads, clutch plates)

Basalt scale properties depend on the basaltic rock chemical composition used for its production. To select the required properties of BS materials, for example, more heat-resistant and chemically resistant ones, it is necessary to select the basaltic rocks and select the required binders for production of corresponding materials.

Technologies and equipment

Brief technology description:

  • Loading crushed loosened rock in the rock-melting furnace.
  • Producing the melt in the furnace;
  • Extracting the melt from the furnace feeder and bushing assembly.
  • Producing the primary scale at the scale-forming unit.
  • Separating the basalt scale fractions.
  • Dosing and packing of BS


There are two types of BS production plants – BSk 20 and BSk 60.

BSk 20 is gas-electric  plant and designed for manufacturing process management, selection of basalt raw material, execution of process conditions, training of customer personnel, and basalt scale production.

BSk 60 is an industrial gas-electric plant with capacity of 60 kg/hour of basalt scale.

BS-based materials

General use of BS materials – reinforced, wear-resistant, abrasion-resistant, chemical-resistant, corrosion-resistant coatings, and manufacture of composite materials reinforced with BS, plastics materials.

Wear-resistance, chemical-resistance of paint coatings reinforced with BS gives several fold increase of these properties. Plastics durability reinforced with BS increases 2 – 3 times. BS with inorganic binders allows to create incombustible heat-resistant coatings with temperature applications up to 700 °С.

Coatings with content of BS are applied by spraying that provides high-performance of the equipment.


Scope of application

Chemical industry – chemical-resistant protective coating for the tanks, pipelines, steel structures, concrete structures.

Petrochemical industry – chemical and wear-resistant protective coating for the tanks, pipelines, oil pipe lines. Incombustible coating and composite materials.

Metallurgy - corrosive-resistant coatings for sheet metal, and rolled metal.

Automotive industry - corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant, and wear-resistant bottoms of the automobiles.

Shipbuilding industry – painting hulls, deck-erections. Paint coating lifecycle of the ship increases by 4 – 5 times. The hull is much less exposed to corrosion and to fouling of the bottom.

Construction of port structures, oil and gas offshore platforms.

Construction – wear-resistant paint coatings for bridges, tunnels and other critical structures and facilities, waterproof coatings for reinforced concrete structures. Incombustible and heat-resistant paint coatings.

Power engineering – weather-resistant coatings for power lines, corrosion-resistant coverings for water-cooling towers, waterproofing isolation for cooling ponds.
